A tribute for the life and works of the Philippine national hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal, transpired today, December 30, 2022, in front of Rizal's monument at Samal Island City College grounds.
This day of the year 1896 marks the death of our hero, who opened the eyes of the Filipinos, exposed the oppression of colonizers, and fought for the freedom of the country.
City Administrator Nieljun C. Esdrelon emphasized Rizal's sacrifice and stated that the liberty we are enjoying is due to his heroism. "Ating ipamukha sa ating next generation that Rizal gave us freedom. He gave his life for the Filipino" he said.
Further, City Vice Mayor Lemuel T. Reyes, who led the commemorative program, expressed gratitude to everyone who joined the tribute and encouraged them to portray Rizal's heroic deeds for the country. "Tayo po sana ang maging simbolo ng makatao, makadiyos, at matapang para sugpuin ang anumang indikasyon na sasakupin ang ating bayan"
A flag-raising ceremony and floral offering also took place.
The program was joined by the 9th City Council, department heads and employees of the local government unit, personnel from the Department of Education, Department of Interior and Local Government, National Bureau of Investigation, Task Force-Samal, Philippine Coast Guard-IGACOS, Philippine National Police-IGACOS, Bureau of Fire Protection-IGACOS, and fellow Samaleños.
