Fully supported by the different sponsoring companies and organizations, 17 local bangkeros with their Bigiw enthusiastically paddled their way from Babak Port to Kaputian Beach Park as they competed for the speed contest of the annual Bigiw Regatta competition.
Allea Real Estate, captained by Felipe Cabase, was able to finish the race first and was hailed as champion, bringing home a cash prize of P15, 000. Salon International, captained by Daniel Agan, got the first runner-up with a cash prize of P12,000. Bridgeport Harbor and Luxury, captained by Andy Jacildo, was proclaimed the 2nd runner-up with a cash prize of P9,000. Plaques and medals were also given to the winners.
In addition, other participants of the competition went home with a consolation prize of P6,000.
City Investment and Tourism Officer Jennifer D. Cariaga lauded the winners and participating sailors for the bravery that they have exhibited notwithstanding the distance they traveled and the fiery heat of the sun.
“This is part of our marketing. Dili lang ni. Maghimo ta og event na atong part sa marketing and promotion sa atong isla. So naa pa tay daghang na plans and programs to promote, and this is just one to promote Island Garden City of Samal for the world to discover”, Ms. Cariaga accentuated.
Further, Bigiw Regatta is not just viewed as mere sporting event that attract tourists but a celebration of the tradition of the sailors on the island.
The event was made successful by the local government of the Island Garden City of Samal through the facilitation of the City Investment and Tourism Office and City Agriculture's Office-Fishery Division in collaboration with the Philippine Coast Guard-IGACOS and the Philippine Ports Authority.
