Launching and ceremonial transplanting on technology demonstration on Red Bulb Onion production

Aspired by the Local Government Unit of the Island Garden City of Samal spearheaded by City Mayor Al David T. Uy, through the City Agriculture’s Office led by Jimuel Rebigan, in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture Regional Office XI led by Regional Executive Director, Macario D. Gonzaga, the Launching and Transplanting Ceremony on Technology Demonstration on Red bulb Onion Production was successfully held on June 03, 2024 at the Demo farm of the New City Hall compound.

Officially commencing the productivity of the high value crop, the ribbon-cutting of the Techno-Demo farm was led by RED Gonzaga, City Administrator Nieljun Esdrelon, Committee chair on Agriculture City Councilor Hon. Aldwin Jumao-as, Regional Technical Director for Operations- DA Dir. Marie Ann Constantino.

Transplanted in the 500 square meter drought-tolerant technology demo area were the variety of Red Bulb Onion, the Red Express. In contrast with other varieties of the aforementioned variety, Red Express matures within 80 days and it can be harvested after 3 months.

Significantly, the endeavor addresses the price hike experienced due to the scarcity of the locally produced bulb onion. According to the PSA data, region 11 has zero production of onion. Consequently, this propelled the Department of Agriculture to conduct technology demonstrations in various municipalities and cities to cultivate the Red Bulb Onion.

In his message, RED Gonzaga, stated that aside from addressing the onion production scarcity, the project aims to aid the farmers, “ang atoang tumong og tinguha nga atoa ning gilaunch kining maayo o high value na produkto sama sa bulb onion na nakaabot gyud dinhi sa Samal kay kini ang usa sa mga proyekto na tinood makatabang mupataas sa ang-ang sa kinabuhi sa atong mga farmers” he said.

Moreover, Mr. Esdrelon conveyed his gratitude for the partnership and collaboration that enabled the realization of the project. He assured that the local government will prosper the given opportunity. "Maningkamot pud mi sa local government unit Samal nga atimanon namo ang inyong gibilin kanamong tanan. Labi na sa mga farmers, mga barangay kagawad nato diri, mga kapitan na into agriculture” he said.

Also present at the significant event were, RED Macario Bong Gonzaga, RTD for Operations, Marie Ann Constantino, DA XI HVCDP Focal Engr. Rubylyn Gomez, City Vice Mayor Lemuel Reyes, duly represented by Ms. Meg Nuevo, Allied Botanical Corporation, Aldiz Incorporated, DA XI HVCDP, PAGRO, and local farmers.
