Chess Tournament: Kings triumphs over Kings

Fide masters, seasoned players, and enthusiasts of chess, from all over Mindanao gathered at the Kan'anan sa Park, Samal district to triumph at the Open Rapid Chess tournament, held on May 31, 2024. 

Tactics were executed, techniques were played and pieces were wiped off within the seven (7) rounds of the tournament until one king remained firmly standing declaring checkmate. 

Hailed as the 4th runner-up and given 2,000 pesos was Reynaldo Gempero, 3rd runner-up bagging 3,000 pesos was National Master Cedric Magno, 2nd runner-up taking home 5,000 pesos was Jerome Pullos, and 1st runner-up receiving 7,000 pesos was Gino Angelo Asuncion. Finally, declared as the champion taking home a whopping cash prize worth 10,000 pesos was Fide Master Austin Jacob Literatus. 

The following is the list of runner-ups and special awardees receiving cash incentives and a certificate: 5th runner-up - Perkins Bayronn, 6th runner-up - Henry Brua, 7th runner-up – Kobi Bryant Segura, 8th runner-up – John Cristian Lesaca, 9th runner-up – Marlowe Cagulada, 10th runner-up – Paolo Prado, 11th runner-up – Jao Bulicatin.

In his message, City Mayor Al David T. Uy expressed his appreciation and congratulatory for the collective efforts that ensured the success of the event and to the chess players for participating. He further gave recognition and commended the chess players who boosted the rank of IGACOS in DAVRAA. “Sa mga niagi na tournament- sa batang pinoy, sa DAVRAA, sa mga tournaments pud nga giapilan sa mga chess players sa IGACOS, gwapo ang resulta. Nakita gyud nato nga nag excel ang atong mga players“, he said. 

Meanwhile, high hopes for the players to excel were conveyed by City Vice Mayor Lemuel ‘Toto’ Reyes, “Hopefully, taas pa ni silag maabot through ingun ani nga mga event. Dili mawala ang ilahang hilig sa pag dula ug magpadayon ang ilang hilig hangtud maabot sila sa national or unta, hopefully, mulaban sa international”. 

IGACOS Chess Club president, Engr. Ariel Yap express his gratitude to the local government unit of IGACOS for the relentless support to the sport and making chess tournaments possible and successful. “Dili ni maiphaigayon nga tournament of course kung wala ang dakong sponsor, the Local Government Unit of Samal… Malipayon kaayu ang chess club diri sa Samal kay tungod ang LGU sa Samal nag gahin gyud og budget para sa chess tournament. “
