50 Couples tie knots in Kasalan Ng Bayan

Solemnized by City Mayor Al David T. Uy, 50 newlyweds tied the knot during the "Kasalan ng Bayan", facilitated by the local government of Island Garden City of Samal through the City Civil Registrar's Office headed by Mr. Joel Padillo on March 6, 2024.

Kasalan ng Bayan is a program of the City Government that offers the opportunity to couples who have been cohabiting for five (5) years or more to be wed for free and eventually legitimize their children. In addition, the application for the marriage license, the registration of the marriage certificate, and the processing fees were free.

Based on the statistical records of the CCRO, approximately 80% of the children were conceived and born outside of a valid marriage, and only 20% were born legitimately. Mr. Padillo also considered the cohabitation of an unmarried person a social problem, as it would result in the limitation of rights for the illegitimate child as well as for the common-law spouse.

In his remarks, Mayor Uy congratulated the couples that they had finally decided to get married and promised to give additional cash assistance to the newlyweds.

During the wedding ceremony, the newlywed couples were also feted with the traditional cake-cutting and wine tasting, all sponsored by the City Government. City Vice Mayor Lemuel Reyes, department heads, godparents, and the families of the couples gathered and joined in the special occasion.
