P 2.5 B Davao-Samal bridge possible under Duterte watch

Posted in http://www.mindanaodailynews.com April 23, 2018

PENAPLATA, Samal City -- Island Garden City of Samal (IGACOS) Mayor Al David Uy remains optimistic that the construction of the PHP2.51 bridge linking the island city to Davao mainland will take off during the Duterte administration.

Uy said he has information that the construction of the Samal-Davao bridge project would start before President Duterte steps down in 2022.

He said the budget of PHP90 million will be made available to complete the feasibility and structural design.

“Next year, the P90-million budget will come intended to complete feasibility and structural design for the bridge, that’s why I have high hope that before the President steps down the construction of the bridge would have then been started,” the mayor said.

In June last year, DPWH 11 reported that the PHP16.47-billion Samal-Davao bridge would begin construction in mid-2019 and will be completed in 2024.

Davao del Norte provincial officials have been lobbying for the construction of the Samal Bridge and its inclusion in the high-priority projects of the Duterte administration.

Uy bared five other funded high-priority projects for the island, including the sub-island of Talikud this year and 2019 aside from the PHP150-million new city hall that is already being constructed in sitio Mag, Penaplata and the continuing construction of the PHP1.8-billion circumferential road DPWH project around the main island.

“By next year, DPWH will also start the construction of the circumferential road around Talikud Island with an initial funding of PHP250 million,” Uy said.

To complement and boost the tourism potential of Talikud, the mayor will also put up a PHP15-million infirmary, a primary hospital and another PHP15-million for material recovery facility in the sub-island.

The funds will be sourced through a loan. Also part of the PHP190-million loan would be the funding for the waste water treatment facility and sewerage project and the expansion of the sanitary landfill in the island.

Uy said addressing the waste problem of the island is crucial before the Samal bridge construction.

“The basic infrastructures have to be laid down now,”he added.

The mayor is also awaiting the implementation of the PHP70-million bulk water project of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to address the perennial problem of lack of water in the island.

The city government is also lobbying for the replacement of the dilapidated submarine cable of the Davao del Norte Electric Cooperative (DANECO) with new one capable to carry higher power supply.

“If hindi kaya ng Daneco, we better give it to someone else,” Uy added. PNA
