ISLAND GARDEN CITY OF SAMAL, Davao del Norte -– In a bid to further promote investments in the island, the City Investment and Tourism Office (CITO) held an Investment Forum on Seaweeds and Mariculture by-Products last March 14, 2018 at Camp Holiday Beach Resort and Recreation Area, Kinawitnon, Babak District.

The forum, which is held in partnership with Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), and the City Agriculture Office (Cagro), seeks to facilitate a dialogue between the seaweeds growers, land owners, and companies.

City Vice Mayor Orly A. Amit, during his message, said the city is set to develop the Samal City Mariculture Park.

At present the city is still looking for a site of the park. Amit said the site must fit the criteria for choosing a location as to where the mariculture park will be established.

“Samal City is suitable for Mariculture Park operations... We make it sure that our environment is protected in using fish cage technology,” Amit said.

Meanwhile, the Department of Agriculture and City Fisheries and Agriculture Office gave an overview the possible production and profit of the Mariculture operation. Maximo Ricohermoso, president of MCPI Corporation tackled the economic opportunities on seaweeds production and processing.

“There will be a market and opportunities in seaweeds productions [like] livelihood for those non-working mother or wife of the fishermen," Ricohermoso said.

The forum was attended by sp,e 90 participants coming from City Tourism Council, Samal Island Chamber of Commerce, media entities, and other private sectors including seaweeds growers and land owners.Emma
