FIVE sites are being looked into for the establishment of an additional airport in Davao Region.

During the press conference on the Davao Regional Development Plan (DRDP) 2017-2022 at the SMX Convention Center, SM Lanang Premier, Davao City, Maria Lourdes D. Lim, regional director of the National Economic and Development Authority (Neda)-Davao and Regional Development Council (RDC) 11 vice chair, said the sites that are being looked into the possible establishment of a new airport in the region are Tagum City, Panabo City, and Island Garden City of Samal in Davao del Norte; Callawa, Davao City bordering Panabo City; and Sta. Maria in Davao del Sur.

"Building another airport in the region is still in the drawing board of the RDC 11 and we have passed a resolution last year endorsing the five sites for a future international airport that would serve the whole region," she said.
Lim said they have yet to seek the commitment of Department of Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade to pursue a study on the establishment of a new international airport.
"As far as our homework is concerned, we are already done. We have created a technical working group and the team
has visited the five and ranked this alternative sites," she said adding that Tagum City topped the list as the most viable location for a new airport.
For his part, Davao del Norte Governor Anthony G. del Rosario, who is also the RDC 11 chair, said while there is still the need to expand the Francisco Bangoy International Airport (FBIA) as it reaches its capacity, in the long run there is stilll a need to establish a new airport.
He said they do not want to see the problem being experienced by Ninoy Aquino International Airport where only terminals were added but air traffic still persists.
"If you visit major cities like Tokyo and Paris, they have several airports. The idea really is to have a different airport, which is relatively far from the other airport so they do not share the same air space," del Rosario said.
He said Tagum City is an ideal location due to its distance from Davao City.
